Catalonia has to build its 21st century existence. What do I mean by that? Since the recovery of democracy in the mid-70’s, Catalan society and politicians have tried to build a space of freedom within the new democratic Spanish state.
We, the Catalans, wanted to be ourselves within the already existing structures. But after 30 years trying, we realize that this is impossible. So here we are in the second decade of the 21st century trying to explain to the world that Catalonia now needs to build its own structures. Internet, the global network, has to help us with our aim. Fortunately technology provides great tools that make everything more transparent and democratic.
You may remember how the Chiapas conflict was shown to the world thanks to a student from Texas who made the first Zapatista Army of National Liberation website, publishing all their communiques. From there on, different groups and Internet websites spread their struggle to the world.
Nowadays, mobile technologies let us inform the world in seconds of what is happening, for example when on September 11th in Barcelona more than one and a half million people called to the world to be heard and to be helped.
And we must go on with this spirit through the free communication platforms: blogs, social networks and websites. They allow us to join large civic majorities, working peacefully for the international community to take a serious, democratic and unflinching part on this issue.
Barcelona has just hosted its 8th Mobile World Congress and this has been a great international showroom for Catalan technological companies. This has been not only now but always, because we feel we form part of this world. We want to be Catalans in the world as we were in the past. At this Congress, the 72.000 people attending could see we have a competitive and talented character to offer the world. I’m sure some of those attending this congress have discovered that we are not the way some “traditional” Spanish media explain to the world… although they also use free communication platforms.

Catalunya ha de construir la seva existència en el segle XXI. Què vull dir amb això? Des de la recuperació de la democràcia a mitjans dels 70, la societat i els polítics catalans van tractar de construir un espai on sentir-nos en llibertat integrat dins del nou estat democràtic espanyol.
Nosaltres, els catalans, volíem poder sentir-nos nosaltres mateixos en les estructures ja existents. Però després de 30 anys intentant-ho, hem descobert que això és impossible. Així que aquí estem, en la segona dècada del segle 21, tractant d’explicar el món que ara, Catalunya necessita construir les seves pròpies estructures. Internet, la xarxa global, ha de ajudar-nos en el nostre objectiu. Afortunadament, la tecnologia ens ha donat moltes eines i molt bones, que fan que avui en dia, tot pugui ser més transparent i democràtic.
Potser recordareu com el conflicte de Chiapas es va donar a conèixer al món gràcies a un estudiant de Texas que va fer el primer lloc web de l’Exèrcit Zapatista d’Alliberament Nacional, on es publicaven totes les comunicacions d’aquesta organització. A partir de llavors, diferents grups i llocs web han explicat al món la seva lluita.
Avui en dia, les tecnologies mòbils ens permeten informar a tot el món en qüestió de segons el que va succeir, per exemple, l’11 de setembre a Barcelona, on més d’un milió i mig de persones van reclamar el món ser escoltats i ser ajudats.
I hem de seguir amb aquest esperit a través de les plataformes de comunicació “lliures”: blocs, xarxes socials i llocs web. Aquestes plataformes ens han de permetre ajuntar grans majories, pacíficament i de manera cívica treballant per a que la comunitat internacional prengui part seriosa, democràtica i sense por en aquesta qüestió.
Barcelona acaba celebrar el seu vuitè Congrés Mòbil Mundial i això ha estat una gran sala d’exposició internacional per les empreses tecnològiques catalanes. Això ha estat ara, però també sempre, perquè ens sentim part d’aquest món. Ens agrada ser catalans al món com ho vàrem ser en el passat. En aquest Congrés, 72.000 assistències han pogut veure que tenim un caràcter competitiu i amb talent per oferir al món. Estic segur que alguns dels assistents d’aquest congrés ha descobert que no som com alguns mitjans de comunicació espanyols “tradicionals” expliquen… encara que també utilitzin plataformes “lliures” de comunicació.
